Summer is officially here! How do we know? The days are longer, the kids are out of school, and families are away on their long-awaited vacations. There’s no way to escape the fact that it’s summer. At NCE we are big advocates of taking time for needed breaks (check out our post Time Out! Why Taking Time Out for Yourself is Important for more on this topic), but it is also important to remain motivated when you are working to achieve your professional goals. At NCE, we know summer can be one of the hardest times of year to stay on track. That’s why we have compiled this list of ways to stay motivated this summer.
Enjoy small summer pleasures.
It’s hot in the summer. And what is the best remedy when it’s hot? Ice cream! Or maybe a quick dip in the community pool! Don’t underestimate these small summer pleasures. It can sometimes be hard to balance these simple joys when you are also trying to pursue your professional goals. But the keyword here is “balance”. A bit of indulgence can go a long way when you are trying to balance work and pleasure.
Set reasonable goals and reward yourself.
Make a list of your goals in order of importance to you. After you achieve a goal, make an effort to reward yourself. Take a weekend trip to the coast or out into the country. Upon achieving your next goal, treat yourself again! There is no reason you can’t let off steam when public holidays or end-of-programs do come along. Oh, and did we mention ice cream?
Stick to your vision board.
Write your vision down. Create a collage. Tell a loved one about your goals. Print out one picture that represents what you are striving for and post it next to your bathroom mirror. These are just a few tricks for making that vision of yours a bit more tangible. The next step, especially now in the middle of the summer, is to return to your vision. Read it over again. Imagine where you are going. Whatever you do, don’t lose sight of your goals this summer!
Dress the part.
It can be tempting to dress more casually in the summer. Warmer weather and laid back summer vibes can make it tough to want to put on your work clothes. But there is a correlation between how we dress and the way we work. So dress the part for your field of study to help keep your motivation up this summer.
Create your own quitting time.
There are lots of tasks that may make up your day from work to school to caring for your family. With all of this going on it might feel like you are working around the clock. However, it is also healthy (and necessary!) to carve out time for leisure. It’s ok to tell yourself, ‘Sunday is a family day,’ or ‘After 8pm, no more work.’ Creating your own quitting time helps you get the rest and relaxation you need to make it through the summer at the top of your game.
One great advantage of summer is that the extra daylight gives us more time to balance all we need to get done, including finding time for enjoyment. So, use the above recommendations to your advantage and conquer your career training program through the summer.
