Why Become An Electrician?

Let’s face it, there are a lot of options when it comes to choosing a career path. You could be a lawyer or you could be an opera singer. You could be a store manager or you could be a zookeeper. You could be a butcher, a baker, or a candlestick maker! With so many options it is easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s why we decided to focus on just one great career option in this week’s blog article, Why Become An Electrician?

Career Options

There are tons of career options when it comes to working as an electrician. Just think of all the things we use in our daily life that require electricity. Well, there are people who are trained and specialized in all those different things! Here are just some examples of career options that you could pursue as an electrician:

  • Inside Wireman - Work with electrical systems inside industrial and commercial environments
  • Outside Lineman - Work on the lines that carry electricity from the power plant to end users
  • Installer Technician - Install cabling for voice, video, and data transmissions
  • Residential Wireman - Work with electrical systems in residential environments
  • Traffic/Train Signal Technician - Install, repair and maintain traffic and train signals

Again, these are just some examples of careers you could pursue if you become an electrician. So if you want to have a lot of options, this could be a great career for you!

Job Security

As mentioned above, our modern society is heavily dependent on electricity. From TVs to cell phones to microwaves to refrigerators, electricity is all around us. And as long as Americans from coast to coast rely on electricity to power their world, electricians will continue to be in demand.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of electricians is expected to increase by 14% from 2014 to 2024. This is much faster than expected than the average for other occupations. The BLS also states that this growth will account for an estimated 85,900 new jobs for electricians in the United States.

Enjoy Your Work Environment

Let’s face it, office jobs aren’t for everyone. Sitting at a computer all day can be boring and mind-numbing. So if an office job sounds like a nightmare to you, there’s a chance that you would prefer to become an electrician as an alternative.

As an electrician, you will spend a lot of time on your feet and working with your hands. No rolling chairs or cubicles for you! In addition, working as an electrician typically requires you to go to different sites depending on the day, week or time of year. So if you become an electrician you will also have the opportunity to explore a variety of work environments.

Get Started Soon

Unlike many professions that require years and years of training in order to enter the field, you can become an electrician in a very reasonable amount of time. Electrician training programs at career colleges and trade schools often offer programs that can be completed in under a year.

Here at NCE in Citrus Heights, we offer an electrician program that can be completed in as little as 10.5 months. That means you can get out in the field and start earning money while others are still spending money getting trained for their careers!

So let’s recap: Why become an electrician?

  1. You can have a variety of career options
  2. You can enjoy reasonable job security because you will enter a growing field
  3. You can actually enjoy your work environment
  4. You can get started on your new career in under a year
